The Neighborhood Initiative Unit is responsible for targeted areas where there have been higher levels of crime or minor offenses that have impacted the quality of life of the residents. Formerly the Community Police Division, this unit has new responsibilities and has forged a lasting partnership with the Neighborhood Associations and the Meriden Council of Neighborhoods.
Lieutenant Sal Nesci is the Neighborhood Initiative Unit Commander. He began his career as a Patrol Officer where he worked for several years. He was selected to be a School Resource Officer for F.T. Maloney High School when the SRO Program started. He was promoted in 2006 to Sergeant and was selected by Chief Cossette to resume our community police efforts with the Neighborhood Initiative Unit. Since its' inception in 2006, the Neighborhood Initiative Unit has grown to 7 Neighborhood Initiative Officers and 5 School Resource Officers. Lieutenant Nesci coordinates the efforts of the N.I. Officers, meets regularly with Neighborhood Association members, plans enforcement in problem areas, and works closely with other agencies and groups to bring positive change to the neighborhoods his unit covers. To contact Lieutenant Nesci, call (203) 630-6258 or send an email to snesci@ci.meriden.ct.us.
If you are would like to take an active part in your neighborhood assocation, click on the Meriden Council of Neighborhoods website and attend an Assocation Meeting. Neighborhood Initiative Officers and supervisors attend all meetings and want to hear your feedback.
Since Chief Cossette re-instituted the program in 2005, the Neigbhorhood Initiative Unit has grown to 10 N.I. Officers and 5 School Resource Officers covering 9 Core Neighborhoods and all middle and high schools. The members of the Neighborhood Initiative Unit work varied schedules to address crime problems and quality of life issues in their areas.
